Hi everyone! We’ve entered the busiest month of the year—I hope you’re all doing well and getting ready to wrap things up!
The other day, while I was having a meeting by the lake, I came across an article in an English newspaper about the famous Japanese singer Yumi Matsutoya, also known as Yuming. The article focused on her thoughts about AI and creativity. She shared some really deep insights about what creators should do in this AI era.
Today, I’d like to introduce a part of her English interview. Hope you find the episode insightful!
師走に突入して、急に慌ただしくなってきた感じがします。皆さんはいかがお過ごしですか？ こんにちは！ Sayuriです。今日は、シンガー松任谷由実（ユーミン）の英語の記事をJapan Timesで読んでいて、この番組のテーマにもぴったりで素敵だなと感じたのでご紹介したいと思います。
🎧Podcast Vol238：Yuming on the Secrets of Creativity in the AI Era 【ユーミンが語る】AI時代に欠かせないクリエイティビティーの秘訣
ユーミンにとって 40枚目のオリジナル・アルバム「Wormhole / Yumi AraI」がリリースされたばかり。
制作手法として、過去のボーカルトラックの声を引き出し、それをAI音声合成ソフト（Synthesizer V）に学習させたうえで、「再構築された声」 を使っています。「過去の声 × AI × 現在の声」という、時空を超えたコラボレーション的作品となっています。
メディアからも、この作品を「AIと人間の共生」に挑戦したアルバムとして注目されています。さらに、「技術的実験」というだけでなく、「創造の本質は人間にある」と再確認させる内容として評価されています。AIを使った制作だからこそ、「ゼロからイチを作る力は人にしかない」というメッセージ性も強く、多くのファン／批評家の間で「AI時代の創造性」を考えさせられる作品。
皆さんに共有し、一緒に考えていきたい内容だと感じましたので、彼女本人のインタビューの内容を抜粋して、ご紹介します。Podcast音声では、日本語でも解説しています。
What advice would you give today’s artists about using AI or other technology for music or live performances?
Have a strong sense of self, both physically and mentally. If you know who you are, you can use technology efficiently to refine yourself. But you must have a strong core—especially in a future where a copy of you might be possible. You have to know who you are.
Also, hold fast to who you are in the streaming era. Someone who discovers you today finds you new, regardless of trends. Don’t chase trends. Play counts can be surprisingly big, but they are just numbers. Build a community that truly understands you.
──AI やテクノロジーを音楽やライブに取り入れるにあたって、今のアーティストたちにどんなアドバイスをしますか？
・〇〇的にも〇〇的にも、強い「〇〇」という感覚を持つこと
・自分が〇〇かを理解していれば、テクノロジーを自分を〇〇ために有効に使えます。
・そのためには強い“〇”が必要
・将来自分の〇〇〇が現れるかもしれない時代
・自分が〇〇なのか、しっかり〇〇〇おく必要があります。
・ストリーミング時代でも「〇〇〇〇〇」を手放さないこと
・今日あなたを知った人にとっては、トレンドに関係なく 「あなたは〇〇〇〇〇」です。
・流行を追いかけなくていい
・再生回数は意外と大きなインパクトがありますが、所詮は数字です。
・本当にあなたを〇〇してくれる人との〇〇性を築いてください。
Finally, is there anything you’d like listeners to keep in mind when they listen to Wormhole?
The message of this album is “Live strongly”. There are so many disasters and difficulties in the world, but you really need to keep a strong sense of self. That is the most important thing.
